City of Newburgh Police have made an arrest in connection with the September 27 shooting at the recreation center.

On Saturday, October 11,  a 16 year old male was arrested in connection with this shooting and charged with Assault in the 1st degree. His name is being withheld due to his age.

“It is very disheartening that this shooting took place in broad daylight and in front of multiple eyewitnesses who most likely knew the identity of the shooter, however refused to cooperate with detectives," said Police Chief Arnold "Butch" Amthor. "Gun play is a consistent problem here in Newburgh and until the community impacted says it’s had enough of this violence, all the police can do is be reactive and responsive after the fact”

This shooting took place shortly before 6 p.m.  near the basketball courts at the City of Newburgh recreation center. The person shot, Najoir Byers, a 19 year old male, was described by police as uncooperative and provided no assistance throughout the investigation.

This incident remains under investigation. Police are asking anyone with any information about this incident to contact the police department at (845) 561-3131.
