Bark (or Meow?) Mitzvah returns to CAI

Posted

Bring your favorite furry (or feathered ) friend to Congregation Agudas Israel this Sunday to hear tales from Noah’s Ark, some refreshments and a blessing for all creatures.
Blessing of the Animals, long a rite of October among Christian congregations, will be celebrated at CAI on North Street in Newburgh. Last year was the congregation’s first annual blessing of the animals. In addition, the event was the first Jewish blessing of the animals in Newburgh.
“Noah was not just save humanity,” said Rabbi Jacob Rosner at last year’s event. “He saved the animals as well.” Rosner emphasized that the story teaches the importance of valuing and honoring animals. “So, I always think of Noah as a zookeeper.”
Organizer Mimica Hyman stresses that, while last year’s event was well-attended by dogs, it is open all all pets, including cats, birds, goldfish and reptiles. All will receive a special blessing from the Rabbi.
The second annual Bark-Mitzvah will take place Sunday, Oct. 25 at 11:30 a.m. at Congregation Agudas Israel on the Koa Yisreal Campus, 290 North Street. RSVP to Hyman at mimicahyman@gmail.com.
