Blue Star Mothers collect goods for deployed troops

On Friday, April 9, members of the Blue Star Mothers of America Hudson Valley NY15 gathered at Montgomery Town Hall for a donation drive to support deployed troops. This was done, as April 9 is New York State Yellow Ribbon Day, a day to honor and remember active troops and the daily sacrifices they make.

The Blue Star Mothers of America are the proud mothers of children who are either on active duty or have been honorably discharged from the military. Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. is a non-partisan, non-political, non-sectarian, non-discriminatory and non-profit organization. The 501(c)3 organization has nearly 6,000 members from over 200 chapters throughout the nation. In addition, the organization provides support for military personnel, promotes patriotism, assists veterans organizations and aids in homeland volunteer efforts to help keep the country strong. The Hudson Valley chapter serves the counties of Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster and Columbia.

On Friday, the group gathered monetary donations as well as snacks and toiletries. These items were used to pack “freedom boxes” to send to deployed troops. The Blue Star Mothers of America Hudson Valley chapter conducted the donation drive via drive-through due to COVID-19 safety restrictions.

Jamie Ackerly, president of the Blue Star Mothers of America Hudson Valley chapter, noted that Friday’s event was very successful.

“The money is still funneling in but we collected enough donated items to pack 103 care packages,” she said.
