Charlotte Martin has played many sports

Charlotte Martin is playing in her second season on Newburgh’s girls’ lacrosse team, and the senior, who plays attack and midfield, is a captain who has played many sports.

Martin played volleyball this fall and may play that sport when she heads to the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Bronx, where she wants to study business.

Martin has also played softball and basketball before she joined the girls’ lacrosse team as a junior.

“I play lacrosse because I wanted to try something new,” said Martin, following a loss last week to Highland.

And with some competitive experience, she is helping the team grow as they learn how to play the game.

“She’s a multi-sport kid,” said Matt Abate, Newburgh’s coach. “Sometimes she gets on girls, but she gets on them because she wants them to do better.”
Martin’s path to lacrosse is similar to that of her sister, Maggie, a 2014 graduate, who switched to that sport from softball.

“I love lacrosse,” she said. “I am glad I started. I love playing, I love the team and coming out everyday.”

Martin’s athletic pursuits have been contained in smaller places and arenas, such as gymnasiums and softball fields. Now Martin is running across larger spaces, on open grass or turf fields, and she is doing so while developing her sticks skill to throw and catch a ball against competition that wants to thwart her efforts.

“It got me in a lot better shape than I already was,” she said. “A lot of new skills, and I am thankful for that.”
