City issues 1,000 municipal IDs

On Wednesday, September 11, the City of Newburgh issued its 1,000th Municipal ID card just two months since the program was officially launched on July 9, 2019.

The City of Newburgh’s Municipal ID program was adopted on April 8, 2019 by a unanimous City Council vote. Originally scheduled to take effect on September 4, 2019, the program was effectively rolled out in less than 90 days to residents, which was by far the fastest among all who provide this service throughout the Hudson Valley.

“Reaching the 1,000 mark for municipal ID’s exemplifies the leadership within our government,” said Mayor Torrance Harvey. “ I am very proud of the work of our unified City Council and City staff who made this valuable service available to the community.”

With a City of Newburgh Municipal ID card, residents who previously did not have various forms of identification now have a reliable form of identification that allows them access to services such as opening bank accounts, accessing health care, and accessing public and government buildings. Residents with Municipal ID cards can also take advantage of resident discounts where available at local businesses.

“Local businesses are offering discounts to customers who present the municipal ID. Presently the list includes eateries and retail stores and a sticker on their door alerts customers to the discount opportunity. The list can be found on the Facebook page for Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson and interested businesses can call me at 845-396-0573 to join the list,” said Rene Mejia Jr., Newburgh Community Organizer, Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson. Residents age 14 and older can apply for municipal IDs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m., at the City Clerk’s office located at City Hall at 83 Broadway. Application fees ranges from $7-$15 and waivers are available for qualifying residents. Documentation is required and applicants are encouraged to complete forms before arriving at City Hall. Forms are available in Spanish and English on the City’s website at www.cityofnewburgh-ny.gov.
