Downing Park hosts free fitness classes on Saturdays

The City of Newburgh has partnered with APG Pilates and is offering fitness classes at Downing Park for no cost.

On Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., from now until November, you can join in on an hour long pilates class with instructor Angela Paul-Gaito. The classes are located near the stone stage by Robinson (9W) and South Street.

The fitness program is beginner-friendly, making it available to anyone interested.

The classes can be booked prior on APG Pilates’ website, or you can walk up while at the park. Attendees must bring their own mat and mask. Hand sanitizer will be available.

You will also be asked to complete a COVID-19 screening.

City Planner Elka Gotfryd reached out to Paul-Gaito mid-August regarding offering a fitness program for Newburgh residents.

“They knew at that time fitness programs were not allowed to happen inside and we were really limited,” said Paul-Gaito. “The only way for us to be able to work was with an outside class.”

Participants are encouraged to make a donation for attending the classes to “help fitness instructors recover from the impact of COVID-19.”

The program is expanding soon to offer yoga classes with Carol Scott and zumba classes with Maritza Calderon.

APG Pilates, located at 87 Liberty Street, is also open for semi-private and private classes, where you are able to use the machines. They are bouncing back from a five month closure due to COVID-19.

All outdoor classes are weather permitting. For more information on the outdoor fitness classes, contact Director of Planning and Development, Alexandra Church.
