Dr. Martin Luther King Day program set for Monday

Posted

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated for his contribution to the advancement of civil rights on the federal holiday, Monday, January 21.
With the theme “Our Beloved Community…Going Forward”, the Black History Committee of the Hudson Valley will host a memorial service at the Mt. Carmel Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, 1524 Route 300 N, Newburgh beginning at 9:30 a.m.
The program will focus on Dr. King’s “beloved community”, which to him is a global vision, in which all people can share in the wealth of the earth; poverty, hunger and homelessness will not be tolerated because international standards of human decency will not allow it. It’s a day of learning with workshops for all ages, renewal through our singspiration segment and developing our Beloved Community with local leaders.

The program begins with an opening ceremony at 9:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., there will be workshops for school-aged youth and panel discussions for adults led by panelists Pastor Cynthia Baumgartner, King of Kings Lutheran Church; Rev. Ed Benson, New Vision Church of Deliverance; Bishop Robert Diaz, The House of God; Rabbi Larry Freedman, Temple Beth Jacob and Cynthia Gilkeson, Community Voices Heard
A Singspirtaion will begin at noon, with the BHC Community Choir.

The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award will be presented at 1 p.m.

The program concludes at 2 p.m. with prizes for attendees and a light lunch.

The annual celebration is open to the public and all ages are welcome. A free will offering will be received at the Monday programs.
