duality is an exploration of unexplained experiences beyond the ordinary realm of human understanding; elements that have properties of being both mystical and physical.

Carl Cox has been a professional photographer for over 30 years, but it wasn’t until twelve years ago that he embarked on creating images inspired by various odds and ends discovered on hikes, at yard sales and antique shops (and sometimes laying on the side of the road). Carl’s photography is an exploration of the dark, unseen world that envelops us in our daily lives, a quest to document the dark elements that surround us and we choose not to experience. Creating an image begins with something that catches my eye; a scarf, a mask found in the forest, a sock discovered hanging from a tree, skeletal remains of an animal found in a swamp. There is a dark world around us that can be seen if we open our minds and accept its existence.

duality will be on display at Unison Gallery through October 29.

“I reside in the Hudson Valley,” Cox said. “ My love of photography began at age twelve while using an old Kodak Instamatic to photograph family and friends. Some of my earliest memories are of the days spent roaming ten acres of undeveloped woodland surrounding my home.”

After experimenting and upgrading cameras for many years, he joined Professional Photographers of America in 2010. It was then I began learning the true art form of photography. This led him to create composite art and eventually launch Carl Cox Studios in Rosendale, New York.

“In 2008 I found the face-mask of a 1970’s resuscitation mannequin while hiking through the woods. It reignited my passion to visually recreate the experiences from my childhood in a series originally titled ‘Journey of the Lost,’ “ he recalled. I began journaling about the days spent in the barn and surrounding woodlands. I recalled the impressions of the spirits that seemed so real that I could reach out and touch them and I renamed the project duality.”

The Unison Gallery is located at 68 Mountain rest Road in New Paltz. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. or by appointment.
