The City of Newburgh is mourning another death to gun violence.

On Saturday, June 8, the City of Newburgh police department received a shot spotter notification for 128 S. Robinson Ave. Upon arrival officers located a large crowd fighting in the parking lot near the Dunkin Donuts.

While handling the fight the police department received a shot spotter notification for 140 S. Clark Street. In the area of Bridge Street and Carson Avenue officers located a male who had a gunshot wound.

While on both scenes the police department received a call for two males that had arrived at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital with gunshot wounds. It was learned that the two males had been shot at 128 S. Robinson Ave and left that area prior to police arrival.

Police have identified City of Newburgh residents Anthony Burden, age 28 and Dejon Jones, age 28 as the individuals who sustained gunshot wounds in the area of 128 S. Robinson Avenue.

The male found in the area of Bridge Street and Carson Avenue was transported to St. Luke’s Cornwall hospital where he was later pronounced dead. He was later identified as City of Newburgh resident Cherod Gayle, age 20.

Gayle played for Newburgh boys’ varsity basketball team during the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 school years, and he will be remembered as a good teammate and tough competitor.

“Cherod did not back down to anyone on the court,” said Matt Brown, Newburgh’s coach at that time. “He was an elite competitor and was a great teammate.”

“All of his teammates respected him and gravitated to his personality,” said Brown. “This is a devastating loss for his family and the Newburgh community.”

These incidents are currently being investigated by the City of Newburgh Police Department, New York State Police Major Crimes, and the Orange County District Attorney’s office.

No further information is being released at this time. Anyone with information involving these incidents are being asked to contact the City of Newburgh Police Department at (845) 561-3131.
