GNSO presents an all-strings concert

Posted

The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) will perform a strings-only concert on Saturday, February 16, at 7:30 p.m. at Aquinas Hall on the Mount Saint Mary College campus in Newburgh. “Threading Strands,” under the direction of Maestro Russell Ger, will feature the works of six international composers.

“The GNSO has never before presented a strings-only concert,” Ger noted, “but that’s precisely what this unique performance will be. It enables the orchestra and audience to explore some different repertoire that everyone will find both mutually enriching and deeply alluring.”

The compositions include Stephenson’s “Printemps,” Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry,” Pärt’s “Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten,” Vaughan-Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis,” Rautavaara’s “String Suite, and concludes with Grieg’s “Holberg Suite.”

In its third year of Ger’s leadership, the GNSO set new attendance records at its season-opening concert in October and second annual Holiday Concert in December.

Tickets to Saturday’s concert are: Balcony $50, Reserved $40, Open $35, Senior Citizen $25 – can be purchased online or at the door. Call 913-7157 or visit newburghsymphony.org.

Students are admitted free to Open seating. Arrive at 6:30 p.m. for the concert preview by Gordon Shacklett.

The snow date for the concert is Sunday, February 17, at 4 p.m.
