Tennis’ postseason starts next week with the OCIAA championships May 15-17 in Goshen, and Newburgh started to wind down its regular season Monday, April 29, with a 7-0 victory over Valley Central.
“We are doing well,” said Dennis Maher, Newburgh’s coach.
Troy Steiner, Newburgh’s first singles player, stopped Henri Pothier 6-0, 6-3, and Arnav Shah, at second singles, beat Justin Kochetti, 6-0, 6-1. Aarev Shah, at third singles, defeated Ignacio Santa Marta 6-2, 6-0. At fourth singles, Jahari Blake shut down Matt Cepala, 6-0, 6-0.
At first doubles, Newburgh’s Raj Patel and Shabab Islam stopped Alex Ramos and C.J. Malley 6-1, 7-5. At second doubles, Adam Amer and Michael Deyo beat Cameron Davidson and Nate Walker 6-1, 6-4. And at third doubles, George Mocko and Redwan Arosh defeated Nick Rodriguez and Thomas Wortz 6-3, 7-5.
In the postseason, Newburgh’s Steiner will complete in singles. The Shah brothers, at second and third singles, will be a wild-card doubles team.
