Goldbacks drop lacrosse opener

Newburgh boys’ lacrosse team played a couple of close scrimmages before their season opener Monday, March 25 against Haldane, from Section 1.

Newburgh’s Aidan Connolly scored two goals in the first quarter before Haldane shifted that momentum at the buzzer with goal in the first period.

Haldane came out in the second quarter and scored three goals to take a 4-3 lead at the half. And from there any hope of the victory in the season opener vanished for Newburgh in the second half as Haldane rolled on toward a 13-5 victory over the Goldbacks.

“In the second half, it was matter of our offense not controlling the ball,” said Jimmy Horton, Newburgh’s coach. “The defense got tired and then things got a little lopsided.”

Terry Anderson scored a goal with 42 seconds left in the second quarter before adding a pair of goals in the third quarter to lead the Goldbacks with three goals.

But those flashes of offense were few and far between as Haldane deepened the chill on a cool, late afternoon on Academy Field.
