Newburgh’s boys’ tennis entered their match Monday, April 1, against Middletown at home with 1-1 record after opening the season with a victory – that was followed by a loss to Cornwall.

A singles sweep by the Goldbacks helped stop the Middies 5-2. Troy Steiner, at first singles, Arnav Shah, at second singles and Jahari Blake, at fourth singles won in straight sets. Aarav Shah, at third singles, went three sets to beat KD Agyeman 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.

Middletown took a pair of doubles matches, including a three-set victory against Newburgh’s more experienced first doubles team of Shabab Islam and Raj Patel, which lost 6-3,4-6,7-5. Aryan Modhwadiya and Mike Deyo, at third doubles, won Newburgh’s only doubles match 7-6(7-5), 6-4.

“A lot of them are learning how to play doubles,” said Dennis Maher, Newburgh’s coach, of second and third doubles’ teams. That part of it is exciting because it’s nice to see them grow into those positions.”
