Goldbacks have plenty of work to do

Newburgh’s baseball team finished 4-14 in 2018, hitting .206 as a squad, and Scott Seabury, the Goldbacks’ coach, said there is plenty of work to do this year to overcome that performance.

“We’re going to be young this year. And that’s what we are looking forward to. We are trying to turn the program around, get it going in the direction it needs to go,” said Seabury. “And get back to the playoffs.”

The Goldbacks’ starting three pitchers will be Jake Danyluk, Lucas Prokosch, juniors, and Matt Merritt, a senior. Scott Scheppy, a sophomore, is also expected to help on the mound.

Danyluk, Liam Gordon, a junior, and Jake Lanzer, a freshman, will play first base. Matt Barnett, a senior, and Dylan Iorlano, freshman, will play second base. Jayden Caballero, sophomore, and Jhovanny Valdez, a senior, will play shortstop. Prokosch and Mike Manzi, a junior, will play third base.

Kevin Wannamaker, a senior, and Dylan Gonzalez and Billy Corcoran, juniors, will be the outfielders. And Liam Bywater, a senior, Jack Clifford, a sophomore, and Roberto Reade, a freshman, will catch for the Goldbacks.

“We’ll be competitive. I think our pitchers will keep us in some games,” said Seabury. “It’s if we can hit the ball.”

Pine Bush drops out of Class AA’s top division, and Newburgh will compete there with Monroe-Woodbury, Kingston and Middletown.

“We’re going to try and get the offense rolling and hopefully scratch out some runs and win some ball games,” said Seabury.
