Gomez Mill House receives tourism grant from Town of Newburgh

On October 31, 2019, the Gomez Foundation for Mill House was awarded a $3,500 check from the Town of Newburgh for tourism. These funds were originally granted to the Town of Newburgh from Orange County Tourism to increase awareness of tourist destinations within our Town. The Town of Newburgh Town Board voted unanimously to award this check to the Gomez Foundation for Mill House.

Located at 11 Mill House Road in Marlboro, the Gomez Mill House is the oldest Jewish dwelling in North America. In 1716, Jewish pioneer merchant Luis Moses Gomez built the Gomez Mill House to conduct trade and extend his enterprise from New York City to the Mid-Hudson Valley.

As an international tourist destination, the Gomez House is frequented by visitors from countries such as England, Sweden, Turkey, China, and Japan. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a significant regional museum. Through tours and programs, the Gomez Mill House educates the public about the former Mill House owners’ contributions to the multi-cultural history of the Hudson Valley and American history as a whole; and, highlight the importance of preserving this historic site.

“We have a gem of a historic site in the form of the Gomez Mill House here in our Town,” said Town Supervisor Gil Piaquadio, “and I want to thank all who maintain and display this site for public view.”
