Gov. Cuomo must reject Danskammer

Posted

It seems odd that during a global health crisis and climate emergency, NYS would be allowing any more fossil fuel projects. A Wall Street hedgefund called Tiger Infrastructure Partners wants to expand the existing Danskammer plant into a baseload plant.

The Danskammer expansion project is inconsistent with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, NYS’s climate law. People across the Hudson Valley are voicing their opposition to the plant which will burn fracked gas from Pennsylvania nearly 80% of the time. With the recent resolution from the Westchester Legislature opposing the expansion of the plant, Gov. Cuomo needs to show he is a climate leader and stop this dangerous project from moving forward.

The science is clear, we can not continue to build fossil fuel infrastructure and expect to maintain an annual global temperature of 1.5 degrees, as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change put in their 2018 report. If this plant is expanded, asthma rates in the area will increase along with other respiratory issues trapping us in a toxic cycle. More than 25 municipalities have already passed resolutions against this project, the Governor needs to step up and stop this plant before we all suffer.
