The January 2020 monthly meeting of the Hudson Valley Humanists will be held at the New Paltz Community Center on Sunday, January 19th.  It will start at 6 pm in the community center is at 3 Veterans Way, New Paltz, off Route 32 north of the village and Stewart’s.

Topic: What do Epicurus and Epicureanism have to say to Humanists?  Epicurus, an ancient Greek, developed a completely “natural” explanation of the world as we see it, not caused by any supernatural force.  He also proposed that life is to be lived now, not projected into an unseeable future state, that the good life means a life of pleasure rooted in friendship and good relations with others of like mind, staying away from conflict as much as possible.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Tom Rocco, PhD, retired philosophy professor and HVH member.   He taught at a variety of academic institutes, including the Hellenic American University (Athens).

Humanist beliefs lead to a philosophy that stresses the potential value and goodness of human beings, emphasizes common human needs, and seeks solely rational ways of solving human problems.

Hudson Valley Humanists will be collecting toiletries and other necessities for Family of New Paltz.

This meeting is free and open to the public. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.  Any changes in date (weather problem) or time will be on MeetUp.  For more information, email auer1@att.net .
