John W. Gilligan

John W. Gilligan, 92, a retired affiliate with Mayflower Warehousing Association at both the domestic and corporate level, entered into rest on Monday, February 3, 2020.

The son of the late John and Kathleen (Kennedy) Gilligan, John was born in Newburgh.

John was an NFA graduate and attended Siena College prior to wartime enlistment in the US Navy, serving from 1945-1947 on the USS El Dorado in the Pacific Theatre, and in 1951 at Camp Lejeune, NC. John was past President of the Newburgh Rotary Club, former sitting board member of the Greater Newburgh Chamber of Commerce, Mayflower Warehousing Association, the Powelton Country Club, and volunteer for the Farmington Meals on Wheels and Soup Kitchen.

John is survived by his three sons, J. Kevin Gilligan and his wife, Patty of Edina, MN, Daniel F. Gilligan and his wife, Kathy of Portland, ME and Martin J. Gilligan and his wife, Holly of Chatham, NJ; two daughters, Sharon Gilligan, of Simsbury, CT and Patricia M. Squillace and her husband, Wayne of Newburgh, NY; his brother, Thomas Gilligan and his wife, Marian of Boca Grande, FL;14 beloved grandchildren, Beth, David, Lauren, Meghan, Robert, Ryan, Brian, Katie, Daniel, Erin, Tim, Brynn, Chelsea and Sean; 20 great-grandchildren to date! In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his wife, Joan Finnegan Gilligan, and brothers, Warren “Bud” and Michael Gilligan.

The family would like to thank the Kloppenburg family for their kindness to our father.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, 180 South Street, Newburgh. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, New Windsor.
