Keely Hofving played volleyball for Newburgh Free Academy in the fall. The senior took the winter off, but this spring she’ll play girls’ lacrosse during her final season with the Lady Goldbacks.

“She’s probably our best passer,” said Matt Abate, Newburgh’s coach.

Hofving is one of three seniors on the team with Erin Mushlit and Charlotte Martin, and they play attack and midfield. And she plays her position with the consistency needed to help the Lady Goldbacks.

“Just goes out there and plays,” said Abate.

And Abate is counting on Hofving, a captain, Mushlit and Martin to help the Lady Goldbacks inprove this season from a 1-14 campaign in 2018.

“They are going to set an example for the underclassmen,” said Abate.

Hofving expects to attend college in the fall and study education and psychology, and not play sports. But she has enjoyed both of her sports at Newburgh Free Academy.

“I like them both equally,” she said.

And as she played volleyball for the Lady Goldbacks, she has enjoyed the competition and the suspense that is part of the game.

“It’s really fun when you’re on a roll, the ball is going back and forth,” she said, “and it’s really exciting.”

As she approaches her final lacrosse season, she enters this campaign after scoring 16 goals last season in 15 games. The Lady Goldbacks have a feeder program this year with a modified team, and Hofving has enjoyed playing for a team that has struggled annually to win any games.

“It’s really fun,” she said. “It’s fun to work with everybody.”

To help her team this season, Hofving said she has to work on her stick skills and communicating with her teammates to be successful during the next few months.
