Maria Patrocinia deSousa of Newburgh, a retired seamstress, and longtime resident entered into rest Saturday, February 13, 2021, at home surrounded by her family. She was 89.

The daughter of the late Manuel Lopes Mendes and Maria Dos Anjos Ventura Mendes.

Born in Portugal on October 12, 1931, Maria came to the United States on April 30, 1966 with her husband and four children. They achieved the American Dream and found happiness and stability living in the United States.

Maria Patrocinia was the heart and soul of her family. She loved spending time in her vegetable and flower gardens, which reminded her of her life in Vila Ruiva, Portugal. Being outdoors brought her tremendous joy. In addition to gardening, she loved to crochet, sing songs in Portuguese, watch the birds in her backyard, and make fried dough (filhos) with her children. Her faith in God was the center of her life and she modeled it to her family. She enjoyed reading the bible daily and talking on the phone with her relatives near and far. She loved life and always shared the kindest thoughts and words with everyone she met. She will be missed by everyone whom she touched throughout her life.

Maria is survived by her brother Manuel Lopes of Connecticut, sister-in-law Patricia Tomas Lopes. She is also survived by her four children, Constantino deSousa (Kathi), Ana Santos, Maria Lastowski (Ed), Manny deSousa (Diana), 8 Grandchildren and 13 Great grandchildren; and her nephew, Antonio Lopes Jr.

She was predeceased by her husband Joaquim and sister Emilia Lopes and son-in-law Marcos Santos.

All Services and Burial will be private.

Arrangements are under the care of White, Venuto and Morrill Funeral and Cremation Service, 188 N. Plank Road, Newburgh, NY 12550.
