Mount hosts Family Literacy Night at Newburgh Armory

Posted

Young minds from the City of Newburgh and beyond embraced the power of the written word at Family Literacy Night, spearheaded by Mount Saint Mary College teacher candidates.
Hosted at the Newburgh Armory Unity Center, about a dozen Mount graduate Education students presented a variety of interactive literacy stations, including a workshop on poetry featuring a sports theme, an exercise activity that had the children reading and running, and more.

The event was sponsored by the Mount’s Collaborative for Equity in Literacy Learning (CELL). Established in 2012, CELL provides tutoring and out-of-school literacy activities for children pre-school to grade 12 with a focus on reading, conversation, and activities. Each semester, Mount teacher candidates, graduate and undergraduate, help instill a love of reading in local youth as part of their community fieldwork requirement.

Mount literacy programs are held in the Newburgh Armory Unity Center on Saturday mornings, with other educational events hosted on weekdays. Special events, such as Family Literacy Night, are held throughout the year.
