Music series returns to UNICO park

After seven years, the Ferry Godmother Music Circuit is back to where all began at Unico Park on the Newburgh waterfront. Concerts will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, through the month of August.

The creation of Aquanetta “Ferry Godmother” Wright, the initial Newburgh Jazz Series attracted crowds to the waterfront on Wednesday and Thursday nights during July and August. After the 2011 concert season, Wright was asked by the restaurants at the waterfront to take the series away from the waterfront. After entertaining offers from other municipalities, the series was moved to the Orange County Arboretum in the Thomas Bull Memorial Park. After a few years, it returned to Newburgh, this time at the People’s Park at the former Consolidated Iron Works scrapyard. Now it’s back at its original venue, with three distinct programs.

The Newburgh Jazz Series will take place on Friday nights, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. The Orange County Pop, Rock and Doowop series will take place on Saturdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. On Sundays, the Ferry Godmother Stage welcomes Jewish music.

Admission for all the concerts is free.

The Walker Valley Marching Band will set off the Newburgh Jazz Series on Friday, August 16, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. The Walker Valley Band supports local fire companies and is often seen at parades throughout the Wallkill Valley, most recently appearing at the Ulster County Fire Parade.

Also on the opening night bill is Gus Mancini’s Soul Awe-Kestra, playing ancient rhythms with unparalleled energy alongside modern experimental jazz, classical, funk and blues. Band includes one of the few remaining master of the Bugaraboo drums, keeping that ancient tradition alive from Gambia West Africa.

On Saturday, the Pop, Rock and Doowop Series welcomes the Dr. Magkneetoe Medicine Show. Take the fun to the next level with happy legendary classic songs that is guaranteed to make you smile. Dance to the funky upbeat great songs, shake you hips, wave your hands and stomp your feet to the high energy old-school vibes. The music starts at 6:30 p.m.

On Sunday, the Newburgh Jewish Music series will host the Kan Trio to the Newburgh Waterfront. Israeli born and raised they use innovative jazz techniques to present cultural legacy. Concert of straight-forward Jazz , cross over and fusion
