Newburgh’s Amilia Wise-sweat set a new school record in the 800-meter dash with a time of 2:13.56 Friday in Middletown when she qualified for the state meet this weekend.
“Honestly no,” said Wise-sweat, when asked if she ever expected to break the school record, “but I was trying.”
Wise-sweat will return to Middletown for the state meet, and she’ll also compete in the 1,600-meter relay team, which won with a time of 3:57.49. The girls’ 400-meter relay team also won to qualify in Division I.
For the boys’ Ryler Gould, the defending state 400-hurdles champion, will defend his title at the state meet after winning the event with a time of 53.64. Gould also won the 110-hurdles with a time of 14.70 to qualify for the state meet.
