Newburgh’s Makarov qualifies for state meet

Newburgh’s Aleksey Makarov, a senior, finished his final Section 9 championships over the weekend at Valley Central with a victory in the 100-butterfly, setting a new meet record with a time of 51.27 and qualifying for the state meet.

Makarov also won the 200-individual medley with a time 1:53.37 to qualify for the state meet as the Goldbacks finished 3rd at the sectional championships.

After Makarov departs at the end of the season, Luka Samonov will return as a sophomore next year. But as a freshman this year, Samonov finished the postseason with a 3rd place finish in the 500-freestyle and in 6th place in the 200-freestyle.

“He’s had a phenomenal season,” said Zach Williams, Newburgh’s coach, of Samonov. “He’s one of our hardest workers.”

Newburgh’s relay teams helped with the Goldbacks’ overall finish at the sectional championships. The Goldbacks finished 2nd in the 400-freestyle relay and 5th in both of the 200-medley and 200-freestyle relays.

“Our relays,” said Williams, prior to the meet, “I think we could have few fast relays here.”

The state meet will be conducted March 1-2 at the Nassau Aquatics Center on Long Island.
