NFA boys and girls open track season with win

On a cold, brisk afternoon, Monday, April 1, Newburgh Free Academy’s boys’ and girls’ track teams beat visiting Middletown at Academy Field.

The boys’ team won 96-51 behind Ryler Gould’s victories in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. Gould also won the 400-hurdles and ran the lead leg on Newburgh’s winning 3,200-meter relay team.

The Goldbacks won the 400 and 1,600-meter relays. John Abrams won the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs, and Matt Haines won the 800-meter run for the Goldbacks. Amari Castillo won the 100-meter dash, and in the field, James Thorpe won the shot put and the discus for Newburgh.

The girls won 82-51. Amilia Sweat-Wise won the 400 and 800-meter runs, and she ran on Newburgh’s winning 800-meter relay team. Denasia Cheatham won the 100-hurdles, and she was the anchor on Newburgh’s winning 1,600-meter relay team. Alexis King won the triple jump, covering 30-feet. King also ran the lead-leg on Newburgh’s winning 400-meter relay team.

Angelisse Diaz won the pole vault. Diaz was also the top long jumper, covering a distance of 14-feet, 7-inches. And Hayley Maltz won the discus for Newburgh with a throw of 74-feet, 2-inches.
