NFA students, teachers visit Crystal Run Healthcare

Posted

On March 15 and March 22, groups of 22 seniors and two teachers from Newburgh Free Academy’s Health Science pathway visited Crystal Run Healthcare to increase interest in STEM careers by learning from Providers and staff.

A handful of employees presented “Who Am I” talks for the students to describe what they do, what skills are involved in their profession, their educational background, and how they started at Crystal Run Healthcare. Since opening the Newburgh location in 2015, the practice has partnered with Newburgh Free Academy on a number of initiatives, including the Scholars in Scrubs Program, to foster student’s interests in medical careers.

The NFA Health Science pathway educates and prepares students in 10th-12th grade for careers within the health care industry. The program gives students the opportunity to explore careers, learn to reason, think critically, make decisions, solve problems, and communicate effectively as healthcare professionals. The 12th grade scholars complete their program meeting the hours and skill requirements enabling them to sit for the NYS Nursing Home Nurse Aide Certification exam.

“We enjoy having the opportunity to work closely with the students at Newburgh Free Academy and program director, Linda Romano, BSN, RN. It’s extremely important to foster student’s interest in STEM careers and we look forward to continuing this partnership,”said Kathi Ferris, Director of Operations at Crystal Run Healthcare Newburgh.
