NFA swimmers 9th in Section 9 meet

The Newburgh Free Academy girls’ swimming team crowned one Section 9 champion and overall qualified two swimmers for the state championship meet at last week’s Section 9 Girls Swimming and Diving championships at Valley Central High School.

Overall, Newburgh finished ninth with 138 points.
Shaylea Triller qualified for the state championship meet in the 100-yard freestyle with a preliminary time of 53.78. She further improved her time in the finals to 53.49 for a third-place finish.

Meghan Wurster qualified for the state championship with her preliminary time of 5:14.61 in the 500-yard freestyle. Even though her time dropped in the finals, she won a sectional championship with a 5:15.13, about 6 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

Triller missed a berth in the state championships in the 200-yard freestyle with a third-place finish in 1:58.58. She swam a 1:58.31 in the preliminaries.

The New York State Interscholastic Athletic Association championship meet is scheduled for Nov. 22 and 23 at Ithaca College.
