Matt Cavallo was wearing green and white for Cornwall when he started the spring on the JV team baseball team.

As the JV season was coming to a close, Matt Cavallo was moved up to the varsity team and started a game there. Matt Cavallo played second base for Cornwall, and last week he was the leadoff hitter for the Newburgh Nuclears’ junior team and did some relief pitching in a loss to a Rockland team.

“It’s just family man,” said Matt Cavallo, of baseball. “My dad played baseball, and he got me into it.”

Joe Cavallo, Matt’s father, is a junior Nuclears’ coach, and he once played for the Nukes. Matt Cavallo started playing baseball when he was about five years old, and he has spent every summer for about a decade or more playing the game.

“I have been playing every year,” he said.

The American Legion season spans a little more than two months, depending on a team’s stay in the postseason. Matt Cavallo’s school year is finally coming to close, and he can focus solely on the baseball and the whims of Mother Nature to let the game be played.

“It’s fun,” said Matt Cavallo, of playing for the junior Nukes, “it’s a brotherhood.”

When the legion season ends, Matt Cavallo can concentrate on his goals for his first full varsity season with Cornwall.

Matt Cavallo’s goals for next season are simple.

“Wins sections,” he said, “win regions, win states.”
