Newburgh’s one bad inning results in a 9-2 loss

Newburgh’s softball team worked to keep it close Thursday in Maybrook, trailing 3-1 as Valley Central came to bat in the bottom of the fifth inning.

But then it came apart for the Goldbacks as Valley Central scored five runs to put it out of reach before winning 9-2.

“One bad inning has been (a problem) this year,” said Chris Leggett, Newburgh’s coach, after his team dropped to 2-6. “Snake bit in almost every game.”

The Vikings went to work early with three runs in the first inning with a two-run single by Sarah Congelosi and an RBI-single from Erin Feeney. Newburgh cut the lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning when Seylan Ferguson singled home a run.

In the fifth, Congelosi reignited the scoring for Valley Central with a two-run double. Feeney, Valley Central’s starter, singled home another run to make it 6-1. Congelosi then scored on a wild pitch off Sam Miller, Newburgh’s starter.

Karsen Leggett relieved Miller after that run, and she threw a wild pitch that scored Valley Central’s Brooke Mulqueen. Dafne Garcia came up in the sixth inning and drove in Newburgh’s second run with an RBI-single.

Valley Central came back in the bottom of the frame, loaded the bases, and Feeney hit a sacrifice fly with two outs, bringing home Valley Central’s final run and completing a rout of the Goldbacks.

“We made good contact,” said Katie Farrugia, Valley Central’s coach, “but they were catching a lot of our balls.”
