Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus announced on Friday that the Orange County Senior Games will celebrate its 36th year with a variety of competitions, contests, museum tours and social activities for men and women ages 55 and older.
Presented by the Orange County Department of Parks and Office for the Aging, the Senior Games is one of the longest running programs of its kind in the nation. It will be held from September 16 to October 31 at various venues throughout the County.
“The Orange County Senior Games gives older adults a wonderful opportunity to be active and have fun,” Neuhaus said. “We are proud to be celebrating the 36th anniversary of this important event. Staying fit is critical to maintaining good health as we grow older. We will continue to reach out to our County’s older adults with resources to help them stay active and healthy.”
Long-time premier sponsor, ShopRite, provides food and refreshments for most events as well as volunteer staff from their stores. Other sponsors include The Senior Gazette, Village Auto Works, Highland Rehab and Nursing Center, Stage and Nathans LLP, Adams Fairacre Farms, Access Physical Therapy and Wellness, Angry Orchard Cider House, Orange and Rockland and The Bellvale Community.
For certain events, seniors compete for gold, silver and bronze Olympic-style medallions in the following age groups: 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84 and 85 and over. For a registration fee of $12, seniors are eligible for all events and receive a Senior Games t-shirt, along with giveaways, door prizes and refreshments.
“We are delighted to join forces with the Senior Games committee and the Parks Department to host this event,” said AnnMarie Maglione, Orange County’s Director of the Office for the Aging. “We know that exercise and physical activity are good for overall health. A little friendly competition is also fun and we look forward to another wonderful experience.”
