Reward for Information on Video of Animal Cruelty

On May 15, a video involving the torture and murder of a cat was circulated among South Middle School students before being discovered by Dr. Lisa Buon who brought in the City of Newburgh Police Department to investigate the video.

The Police Department is working with the Newburgh Enlarged City School District to find the source of the video.

“At this point in our investigation we are gathering facts and hoping to interview people who have seen the video and who may know where it originated,” wrote Detective Sgt. Joseph Rutigliano. “The video is very disturbing and we encourage anyone who has any information to contact the City of Newburgh Police Detectives.”

The New York State Humane Associate is offering a $1,000 reward for any information that may lead to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the crime.

“It is a known fact that there is a strong correlation between animal abuse and human violence, and in fact, animal abuse is considered a predictor of future human violence,” wrote the Human Association in a statement on Friday. “The individuals who committed this horrific crime and videotaped it must be brought to justice.”

The individuals could face charges of felony animal cruelty and misdemeanor animal cruelty.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Brooks from the City of Newburgh Police Department at 845-569-7513. If anyone has a copy of the video they are asked to email it to jbrooks@cityofnewburgh-ny.gov as soon as possible. All calls will be kept confidential.
