Skoufis to distribute care packages to seniors

In coordination with participating senior citizen centers, Senator James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) will distribute over 650 care packages to seniors in the 39th Senate District. Each year since first being elected to the State Legislature, Senator Skoufis has visited senior centers across the communities he represents, bringing a town hall-style conversation directly to seniors. This year, because Senator Skoufis was unable to visit the centers due to COVID-19, he wanted to continue to touch base in a different, yet meaningful way.

Included in the packages are masks, sanitizers, tea, lotion, snacks, reusable bags, a card with important phone numbers, and a pamphlet with key resources for seniors. The packages will be safely dropped off at participating senior centers and distributed to members throughout the coming weeks. Senator Skoufis hopes these items will bring a moment of wellness to seniors as well as provide them with some essential items to help keep them safe.

“Every year, I look forward to visiting seniors and speaking with them at different centers across the district,” said Senator Skoufis. “Now more than ever, seniors need to know that we are still fighting for them, working for them, and continue to have their needs top-of-mind. Throughout the pandemic, my team and I did extensive outreach to seniors on a daily basis, assisting them with a variety of issues and these care packages are a small way for us to check-in and tell them that we’re here for them.”

Senior centers that responded to Skoufis’ outreach and will be participating in the care package distribution include: Towns of Blooming Grove, Chester, Highlands, Monroe, Montgomery, Newburgh, and Woodbury as well as the North Rockland Meals on Wheels program.

Back in May, Skoufis launched a similar effort, delivering hundreds of “Recovery Kits” to healthcare workers in the district in an effort to bring a moment of wellness to them during recovery time after their shifts.

As Chairman of the Senate’s investigations committee, Skoufis said he is leading a legislative examination of nursing home deaths in New York State and is demanding answers from Department of Health officials.
