Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced that on Thursday, September 24, , Ryan Discua, a/k/a “Soda Pop,” 24, of New Windsor, was sentenced by Orange County Court Judge Robert H. Freehill, to 18 years in state prison in connection with the October 9, 2019 shooting of a man in the City of Newburgh.

On December 16, 2019, Discua pleaded guilty to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.  Discua was sentenced to 18 years in state prison and five years post-release supervision on the charge of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, and ten years in state prison and five years post-release supervision on the charge of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.  The Court ordered the sentences to run concurrently.

At the time that Discua pleaded guilty, he admitted that on October 9, 2019, at approximately 10:50 p.m., in the vicinity of 129 William Street, he tried to kill a man by shooting him with a semiautomatic pistol and that his victim suffered serious physical injury.  Discua also admitted illegally possessing a loaded 9mm pistol when he was arrested by the City of Newburgh Police Department on October 10, 2019.

District Attorney Hoovler thanked the City of Newburgh Police Department for their investigation and the arrest of the defendant, as well as the New York State Police and the Town of New Windsor Police Department who aided in the investigation.

“The fast apprehension of this defendant demonstrates not only the professionalism of City of Newburgh Police Department, but how police agencies in Orange County work collaboratively to keep our residents safe,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “Newburgh residents deserve to be free from wanton gunplay on the streets where they live, work and raise their families, and the community will be safer while this defendant remains incarcerated.”

The case was being prosecuted by Chief Trial Assistant District Attorney Jason Rosenwasser and Assistant District Attorney Richard Giordano.
