Town negotiates purchase of Desmond Estate

Posted

Having secured a $1 million grant from the William and Elaine Kaplan Family Foundation, the Town of Newburgh is working towards the purchase of the historic property from Mount Saint Mary College.

“This 1,000,000 in grants will help ensure that the Desmond Estate continues to provide essential adult enrichment classes and activities,” Town Supervisor Gil Piaquadio said in a letter announcing the approval.

Town Clerk, Joseph Pedi, said that at this time they are completing land surveys and an inspection of the grounds.

“We may decide to put a playground, park or trail there,” said Pedi. “We want to get a snapshot of how the property behaves so we can get an idea of what we want to do with it once we officially own it.”

Right now, there is no set date to sign a purchase contract but they are hoping to finalize the sale by the end of the year and Piaquadio said he does not anticipate any issues with the purchase.

“I cannot thank Mr. William Kaplan, Ms. Joan Kaplan, and the Kaplan Family Foundation enough for supporting this endeavor and all prior projects that improve the quality of life in our community,” said Piaquadio.
