Tyler Serafini, Newburgh’s 182-pounder, went to the state tournament last season and did not come home with a title.

Over the weekend, Serafini prepared for another state title appearance by winning another Section 9 D-1 title with a pin in the final at Monroe-Woodbury.

“The goal is to get top four,” said Serafini, of his appearance in the state tournament at Albany’s Time-Union Center Feb. 22-23.

Serafini, who wrested a 170-pounds this season, bumped up a weight class for the tournament. During the season, Serafini became the all-time victory leader at NFA with his 186th win. He entered the sectional tournament with 191 career victories.

“I am eating, I am drinking,” he said, prior to the sectional tournament. “I am ready to go.”

Maxx DeCapua went to states last season, and he wrestled most of this season at 195 pounds before bumping up to 220 pounds for the sectional tournament this year.

“It’s a really tough weight class,” said DeCapua, “but if I leave all on the mat, I should win.”

DeCapua lost in the final 5-0. Brandon DeLaRosa reached the 126-pound final and lost 9-4.

Newburgh finished third in the tournament with 173 points.
