Warming centers available for Orange County residents in need

Posted

With more frigid weather in the forecast this week, Orange County Executive Steven M. Neuhaus is reminding residents that both County Department of Social Services and municipally operated warming centers are available during the winter months.

“We want all of our residents to remain safe and warm throughout the winter months,” Neuhaus said. “This week’s weather will be particularly harsh and I urge anyone who is in need of shelter to take advantage of these warming centers. I appreciate all of the facilities that open their doors to help the less fortunate in our community. Their unwavering support of those most vulnerable is much appreciated.”

Senior citizens are at higher risk for hypothermia than other adults. Residents should check in on their elderly neighbors, friends and relatives during the cold-weather to make sure their heating systems are working, they are keeping warm and they have supplies and any medicines they need. If you or someone you know is need of assistance, please visit the County’s Housing Resource Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., located at 280 Broadway in Newburgh, or call Helping Others Needing Our Resources (HONOR), Orange County’s contracted homeless provider, for assistance at 343-7115. HONOR is open 24 hours a day.

Several municipalities in Orange County are currently operating warming centers and outreach for those in need. Those locations include but are not limited to:

HONOR 38 Seward Avenue, Middletown, (845) 343-7115

Newburgh Ministry, 104 S. Lander Street, Newburgh: (845) 561-4365.

Middletown Warming Station, St. Paul’s Church, 58 Main Street (entrance on Mulberry Street), Middletown, (845) 343-6911.
