Newburgh resident William Kaplan receives honorary degree by Marist College. Geoffrey Brackett (Executive VP Marist College) read the Citation and the Doctorate was bestowed by President David Yellen.
The award was given to celebrate Mr. Kaplan’s many accomplishments and his lifetime of service to Newburgh and the Hudson River Valley.
The citation stated in part, “William Kaplan, your unwavering devotion to the City of Newburgh is truly admirable and expansive.” The citation also highlighted Kaplan’s legacy program the Newburgh Armory Unity Center which has become a model for collaboration and accomplishment in the education community. “Every Saturday you greet the hard-working parents and grandparents and their children and welcome them to opportunities never before available in Newburgh.”
And continued, “With over 560 students enrolled in more than 40 courses offering a variety of topics ranging from literacy, healthcare/nursing, and computer science to graphic design, engineering, mathematics, art, music, history, chess, and sports every child has an opportunity to improve their educational pathway.
Brackett continued, “The Kaplan history of generosity and commitment to expanding educational opportunity has transformed the lives of countless Newburgh residents and enhanced that community’s quality of life. You and your late wife, Elaine, have clearly passed your sense of commitment along to your daughters Joan, Sheila, Amy and Deborah.” The history of support by the Kaplan Foundations to the areas of healthcare and education is legendary in Newburgh and the surrounding area.
