On March 27 Governor Andrew Cuomo extended the closure of schools at least until April 15.

Marlboro Superintendent Michael Brooks sent a letter to the families, students and staff on this recent development. He noted that in addition to the extension of the closure, the Marlboro school district’s s online learning will pause for Spring Recess from April 6 through April 10 and will resume on April 13.

“If Governor Cuomo doesn’t extend the statewide school closure further, we will plan to resume regular school in our buildings after his order expires on April 15,” he wrote.

Brooks acknowledged the difficulties that everyone is experiencing.

“These challenging times can push people to the limits of stress. If you or someone you know is feeling overwhelmed and needs some assistance please don’t hesitate to reach out to your teachers or guidance counselor for help. You can contact your principal or myself as well. We will do everything we can to connect you to the appropriate counseling support,” he wrote.

Brooks reiterated the advice that has been given by medical experts: social distancing, washing hands and avoiding touching the eyes, nose, mouth with unwashed hands; cover the mouth and nose with a tissue or shirt sleeve when coughing or sneezing and clean and disinfect objects and surfaces frequently.

Brooks said he has not yet received any specific Foundation Aid numbers for Marlboro in the 2021 state budget.

“There is no agreed upon budget yet and I’ve been in contact with our legislative leaders and we’re waiting for the budget to be adopted and see what it is,” he said. “We are in a healthy [economic] position that we can weather storms; we have fund balance and we plan for rainy days and hope for the best...We’ll work through whatever it is.”

Brooks said the Coronavirus caught him by surprise.

“Never in my wildest dreams would I have walked into work on March 13 expecting we would be closing school for five weeks.” he said.

Brooks said a reassessment on whether the closure will be extended further will happen near the April 15 deadline.
