Beautification committee is busy at work

Darlene Plavchak updated the Lloyd Town Board on activities that have been undertaken by the Beautification Committee, pointing out that a number of hanging flower baskets have been placed around the town hamlet. She thanked Peter and Carol Ferrante, owners of Wallkill View Farm, for the flowers and for the town taking care of the watering.

Plavchak pointed out that the Beautification Committee has only three members and is hoping more people will volunteer to help them with the weeding and planting and on other upcoming projects.

Plavchak said they are looking to purchase 24-inch terracotta planters for the corner of Milton and Vineyard, Church and Vineyard, Main and Vineyard, “because there is really nothing there and those [planters] will be used throughout the seasons.”

Plavchak is looking at a number of companies for the purchase of holiday decorations.

“We have to be mindful that hanging anything on a lamp post without an attachment will not keep it from swaying, so we’re going to put roping around them and order commercial battery-operated lights because there are no electrical outlets on the lights.” She said they will be removing all of the old white lights that are presently on the trees and will replace them with new ones. She will be speaking with the Highland Rotary to see if they can assist in re-wrapping and financing the new lights.

Plavchak said her committee will be doing a scarecrow project at Tony Williams Field on Saturday, October 7.

“We’re going to publicize and invite families to come in and each will make a child-sized scarecrow. Once that is completed we would like to attach them to all of the lamp posts and trees in town. We’re going to take a picture of the family completing them and give it to them. We are also working on the committee’s 2024 budget.”

Councilman Lenny Auchmoody thanked Plavchak for her “diligence” and Councilman Mike Guerriero said, “the committee has done a beautiful job.”
