Carly Correa enters her second season on Marlboro’s varsity team

Carly Correa started playing softball when she was 10 years old, and now the Marlboro freshman is playing in her second season on Marlboro’s varsity softball team.

“I love the sport,” said Correa, following a victory last week at Pine Bush, “and it is my main sport.”

Correa is a first baseman and a catcher. She also hits well in the third spot in the lineup, and she doubled home a pair of runs to help Marlboro beat Pine Bush 6-3. Marlboro trailed 3-0, and the Dukes came up in the top of the seventh inning and scored six runs to come back and beat Pine Bush.
“She is one of the best bats on the team, so I am confident she will put the ball in play somewhere,” said Ray Leduc, Marlboro’s coach. “She hits a lot of line drives, and she is on base constantly.”

Correa also worked a pair of walks against Pine Bush as the Dukes pressured the home team - and then opening it up in the seventh inning en-route to their comeback victory.

Correa works hard with her bat, and she is also working to help the Dukes at first base this season.

“She has really worked hard with her glove,” said Leduc.

And as she works to improve her fielding skills, Correa said she could also communicate better on the field to help solidify the defense.

“I need to talk more in the field,” she said.

The Dukes won a state title in 2016. Last season, the Dukes lost in the quarterfinals to Rondout. A few weeks ago, the Dukes faced Rondout at home and beat the Ganders in a slugfest, 10-8.

“I love the team,” Correa says. “We always work hard.”
