Dukes fall in State Tournament

Marlboro’s baseball team did not allow a run in the postseason until Saturday when the Dukes were eliminated from the state tournament on Long Island to Center Moriches, 7-1.

The Dukes, the Section 9, Class B and MHAL champions, finished the season 20-3. The Dukes reached the regional final Saturday after beating Westlake 5-0, of Section 1, Thursday at Pace University Thursday.

Will Logue had the big hit for the Dukes when the designated hitter, batting in the bottom of the lineup, cleared the bases with a double in the fourth inning to make it 4-0.

“My guys worked really hard to get on base,” said Logue. “Did the job, got them in, and it felt great.”

As the offense created its opportunities, Brendan Mahusky controlled his opponents from the mound, throwing a one-hitter complete game with his off-speed pitching.

“I kept them off balance,” said Mahusky. “A no-hitter, it would have been sweet. But it’s OK.”

Aside from the loss that eliminated the Dukes Saturday, Marlboro’s other two losses were incurred by Pine Bush and Valley Central, a pair of Section 9, AA teams.
