On Friday, October 25, at 7:30 pm, Tompkins Corners Cultural Center will present “Older than Ireland,” the fifth film in the TCCC 2019 film series that has been made possible in part by the Putnam Arts Council's Arts Link Grant Program, supported with public funds through the NYS Council on the Arts with support from Gov. Cuomo and the NYS Legislature. This documentary was made in Ireland in 2015 by Alex Fegan who interviewed several people who had reached or surpassed 100 years of life. The participants talk about what they have seen, and learned, about life in that great period of time. These men and women are, indeed, older than Ireland, for when, in 1923, the Irish won the War of Independence from England, a new nation was born, and renamed “Ireland.” The years since have brought great social and economic change. Once almost exclusively an agricultural society, Ireland has become a major global financial center, and in 2019 is now the fifth wealthiest nation in the world. In the film, the participants describe their personal experiences through these extraordinary tumultuous years; they share how living through such dramatic changes affected their view of themselves, their nation, and the human condition.
