HHS pays tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice

Highland High School (HHS) students paid tribute to those who lost their lives in service to our country during the school’s annual Memorial Day assembly on May 25.

The event began with a moving trumpet rendition of the national anthem, played by Assistant Principal Kevin Murphy, and continued with a moment of silence honoring former HHS students who passed away while serving in the United States military.

The assembly, which took place on the school’s front lawn, featured patriotic performances by the HHS Band and Choir. The event’s guest speaker was Lenny Auchmoody, a longtime American Legion member who also serves as a councilman and deputy supervisor for the Town of Lloyd. Auchmoody spoke to the students about freedom and the value of hard work.

“Do the best you can,” he said. “I wish you all luck in the future. God bless you and God bless America.”
Closing out the ceremony, HHS Principal William Zimmer encouraged students to take time out of their Memorial Day weekends to reflect on all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
