Highland High School invites you to their musical production of “The Little Mermaid,” which tells the classic story of Ariel, the rebellious mermaid who is fascinated with life on land.

The curtain goes up on Feb. 22 and 23 at 7 p.m. in the Highland High School auditorium. This is the 11th full-stage production that the HHS Harlequins, the student theatrical group, will be presenting in as many years.

Students in Grades 9-12 and K-5 are involved in every aspect of this production, from acting to set building to stage crew, said Production Director Lynda Keech, who is the director of choirs at the school. Staff members and many parent volunteers also helped with the show, which has been months in the making.

The famed musical recounts the tale of the charming mermaid Ariel, who falls in love with a human prince after one of her visits to the sea’s surface—something that is forbidden by her controlling father, King Triton. Ariel makes a dangerous deal with Ursula the sea witch to become human for three days. But when plans go awry, the king must make the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter.

Some of the featured student performers include: Sydney Druttman, Grade 10 (Ariel); Jack Kroll, Grade 12 (Prince Eric); Brianna Acosta, Grade 11 (Flounder); Patrick VanNorstrand, Grade 12 (King Triton); Simon Meisel, Grade 10 (Sebastian), and Nia Lawrence, Grade 12 (Ursula).HHS English and Theatre teacher Krista Petrosoff is the show’s technical director. Grade 10 students Troy Booth and Valerie Cupo, and Grade 12 student Kyle Greiner are the stage managers for the production.

Senior citizens of the Highland community are invited to attend the dress rehearsal for a free showing of the performance on February 20 at 5 p.m. in the High School auditorium. Refreshments will be served during intermission for attendees. Please note this special showing is for senior citizens only.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens. Children under 5 are admitted free. Tickets are available at the door. Please note: the snow date is February 24 at 7 p.m. Highland High School is located at 320 Pancake Hollow Road in Highland.
