Johnson sets new record at Section 9 championship

Marlboro High School senior Josh Johnson left his mark in his last sectional meet.

Johnson further lowered his own Section 9 record and set a new pool record when he won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 49.89 at the Section 9 boys’ swimming and diving championships on Saturday at Valley Central High School in Montgomery.

“It’s going to be broken next year,” Johnson said. “But it feels pretty good.”

Johnson’s previous record was set just two days earlier at the preliminaries when he swam a 50.31 to earn the top seed in Saturday’s finals. He further lowered the mark to 49.89 seconds. It could be broken again by Franklin D. Roosevelt sophomore Troy Speare, who also broke Johnson’s previous record.

He just missed the qualifying mark for All-American consideration.

“I wanted All-American consideration, but I can get that at state, but for right now, 49.89 was really good for me.”

Overall, the Iron Dukes finished 11th with 66 points. The Pine Bush Bushmen won the meet with 319 total points.

Johnson had the Dukes’ only victory, and Ayden Baxter had their only third-place finish when he finished the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:52.69.

Johnson also was fifth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:01.70. Baxter was seventh in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.68 and Chris Felker took 13th in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:25.00.

“We didn’t even have a team when I first came, and now we have a good team,” Johnson said.

“We made sections. I broke our school record, and for Section 9 it’s really grown over the years.

From the first day I came here, we barely had anyone in Section 9, and we weren’t one of the fastest sections. But now I believe we could actually place top five.”
