Junior League sponsors human trafficking awareness program

On Friday, January 10, the Junior League of Orange County (JLOC) sponsored a Human Trafficking Awareness program at the Goshen Public Library. “Human Trafficking is frightening and it can be an uncomfortable topic to start a conversation about,” stated Barbara DeStafeno, JLOC event co-chair. “But it is a relevant topic, especially for children, which is why Junior League wanted to provide a forum for education and awareness about this topic during Human Trafficking Awareness month.”

Junior League teamed up with Fearless! Safe Homes of Orange County to present the animated short film I Am Little Red to encourage a discussion about Human Trafficking. After watching the film, the adults reflected on the film, receive information about tactics human traffickers use and what apps have access to, along with strategies for keeping children safe. The children had a separate discussion on vulnerability, how a trafficker might act, then participated in an activity to help them identify traffickers.

“Fearless! is thankful for the sponsorship of the Junior League of Orange County to host the I Am Little Red Human Trafficking Awareness event,” said Pam O’Dea, Fearless! Collaborative Programs Director. “Partnering in solidarity supports survivors and builds a community response to human trafficking.”

JLOC is collecting donations to help support Safe Harbor “To-Go Bags” for trafficking victims and survivors through the end of January. Items can be dropped off at the Goshen Chamber of Commerce through Tuesday, January 21. Visit .JLOCNY.org for additional information or to make a donation.

JLOC will be hosting an Afternoon Tea and Tour of The Harness Racing Museum on

Saturday, April 18 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Tickets are $45 per person. Proceeds will fund JLOC community projects throughout Orange County.

JLOC would like to thank the Goshen Public Library for the use of the new Community Room for the Human Trafficking Awareness Program. Having access to a free space with video technology and furnishings brings more opportunities for organizations to host free events like this one to the public.
