Lady Dukes run out of miracles

Marlboro’s softball team entered the Section 9 Class B tournament as the seventh-seed, and the Dukes defeated Chester and Dover on the road to face Rondout in Middletown Saturday in the title game.

Rondout, the fourth-seed, split its regular season games with the Dukes, each winning at home. But Saturday the Dukes, the MHAL champions, ran out of miracles as the Ganders shut them down 6-0 to win the sectional title.

“We just didn’t come up with the hit at the right time,” said Ray Leduc, Marlboro’s coach.
Marlboro won a state title in 2016 and entered this season with three seniors. During the sectional loss, they mustered six hits while being shutout.

“They put pressure on us every inning,” said Leduc. “We only held them scoreless in one inning.”

The Lady Dukes reached the finals after wins over Chester and Dover.

The 8-2 win over Chester on Thursday was highlighted Carly Correa’s three runs batted in on two doubles. Kasey Conn went 3 for 4, walk, 2 runs scored, Kaitlyn Tudico went 3 for 4 with a 2-run homer, with 2 rbi and one run scored and Vic Sorace drove in one run.

The Dukes defeated Dover 6-1 on Friday, as Carly Correa went 3 for 4 with one double, Sydney Shuta went two for three with one double and two runs scored and Vic Sorace drove in two runs on two hits and scored one run. Kaitlyn Tudico had a solor home run, while Ava Del Salto allowed no hits, striking out seven in three innings of relief.
