Highland’s softball team finished 7-12 in last season, and return with 11 players this season.

Abby Kemp will pitch to Olivia Bell, her battery mate behind the plate as catcher. Paige Dauenheimer, a three-year starter, will play first base. Sophie Canino will play second with Gillian Dwyer at shortstop. Ella Cappillino, a three-year starter, will watch the hot corner at third base.

Maggie Van Valkenburg will play left field, Adrianna Scalo will be in center field, and Katie Dauenheimer will play right field.

Isabella Coats will help in the outfield, and Arianna Silverio will be a utility player in the outfield and infield.

“I expect us to be young this year as we have no seniors and only three juniors. All the rest of the team is 10th and 9th graders,” said Kathelene Canosa, Highland’s coach. “I expect us to be competitive in every game and work the kinks out with a young team behind the leadership of Paige and Ella.”

Canosa does expect her young squad to get better as the season progresses toward May and beyond.

“As I look forward to the second half of the season,” said Canosa, “my expectations are that our younger players have gained solid playing experience and are able to transition to the varsity level and win the games we are expected to win. We need to play solid defense behind our pitchers and put the bat on the ball to work some runs across the plate.”
