Lecture: Pioneer Jews

On Sunday, July 14, at 11 a.m., following a complimentary bagel breakfast that starts at 10 a.m., the Gomez Mill House is offering a lecture on the Jews who were among the pioneer settlers of the Western United States. The talk will be given by Andrée Aelion Brooks, journalist and author.

Who exactly were these pioneer Jews? What propelled them at various points in time to make the hazardous journey to the still unchartered West? Many were Sephardim and came from diverse backgrounds like Luis Moses Gomez.

We will also hear about later waves of Jewish pioneers in the West: how and why they developed such iconic clothing out there as blue jeans, and the key role they played in the Gold Rush and the growth of banking in the West.

Brooks was formerly a contributing columnist and news writer for The New York Times. She now specializes in writing and teaching about the uncommon stories of Jewish history. Her work has won many awards. She is also a Gomez Foundation House trustee. More information on Brooks can be found at her website,www.andreeaelionbrooks.com.

The Gomez Mill House is at 11 Mill House Road, off Route 9W in Marlborough. The event starts at 10 a.m. with a bagel breakfast, followed by the talk at 11.a.m. A tour of the Gomez Mill House will be offered to attendees following the presentation. Admission is free. Donations are welcome.
