Library accepting donations of new, unwrapped toys

The Ulster County Marine Corps have set up a donation box in the Marlboro Library lobby where they will be accepting toy donations until December 15.
The mission of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the Hudson Valley.

The Sarah Hull Hallock Free Library in Milton invites one and all to its annual holiday open house and tree lighting.
There will be crafty activities for youngsters, plenty of delicious refreshments, and a special magic and puppet show by “Mrs. Santa.” It’s all a part of a Main Street celebration in collaboration with the Hamlet of Milton Association.

The festivities at the library run from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 8. Mrs. Santa arrives at 3 to entertain, and the library’s gift basket raffle drawing concludes the party.

Get ready for the Milton Library gift basket raffle! Whether you put your tickets toward one prize or four, you have the opportunity to donate to a good cause and to win valuable items. Take a chance on the “Be Our Guest,” “Child’s Play,” and/or “Game Night” baskets. There’s also a Lottery Ticket Wreath -- a very popular item in past years.
The baskets are brimful with nifty gifts, including highly valuable gift-certificates (like $400 toward Buttermilk Spa and Henry’s Restaurant, for a spa day for two). Purchase your tickets at the Sarah Hull Hallock Free Library and look for the library’s table at Meet Me in Marlborough’s Holiday Extravaganza (on November 23). Raffle tickets sell for $1 each, $5 for six, and $10 for an arm’s length.
The drawing is on December 8, at the Milton Library’s holiday open house, but you need not be present to win. It’s a sure bet for putting the fun into fundraising.

UNICO Annual Essay Contest, Marlboro Chapter
Each year, UNICO Foundation and UNICO National Chapters donate approximately $1 million to various charities. Scholarships continue to be the primary focus, as roughly one-third of all monies raised goes to deserving students from chapter locations throughout the chain.
One of UNICO’s community programs includes the annual essay contest where 7th and 8th graders are invited by the teachers of the Marlboro Middle School to write from a number of provided topics which are then submitted anonymously and judged by a group of UNICO volunteers. The winners are invited along with their parents and school principal to a dinner where each winner has an opportunity to read their essays, and win an award from UNICO.

This event encourages academic achievement, and gives well deserved notoriety to those students who take the time to participate. John DeMarco, President of UNICO Marlboro, says the award dinner will be held on November 21 and is one of the many way’s UNICO tries to give back to the community; in this case to our youth.
